History of LSM

Life Saver Ministries was started by Kevin and Cathie Coffey in October, 1990 to provide support services to women in a crisis pregnancy situation. In 1992, the IRS conferred its 501c3 tax-exempt status on Life Saver Ministries based on the following mission statement:

"Life Saver Ministries is a local independent, non-profit Christian Ministry that offers an alternative to abortion by providing housing, counseling and other support services, enabling young women and teens in a crisis pregnancy to become self-sufficient responsible adults, through the loving example of caring Christians and the life changing power of Jesus Christ."

The first phase of the ministry consisted of working with churches in the area to recruit and train volunteer families who would open their hearts and homes to a young woman who was pregnant and had no place to turn. The woman was allowed to stay with the shepherding home family for the duration of her pregnancy and for three months after her child was born. During this time, she would receive instruction in life skills and baby care from the shepherding home parents, working in conjunction with Life Saver Ministries staff and community agencies; and work with a trained client advisor to set and reach goals that would allow her to care for herself and her child.

The shepherding home program worked very well for young women in their late teens and early twenties. These young women generally possess the maturity to take care of themselves after participating in the program for six months to a year. This is not the case with younger girls. When girls called us who were fourteen to seventeen years old, although they fit in well with our shepherding home families, they needed longer term care than most families were able to provide.

We needed to develop a place where these younger girls could find a home and be nurtured and taught, while they completed their education and matured enough to face the world on their own. This would be a place where we would make a commitment to these girls of two to four years. We decided to call this place My Father's House.

At the end of 1993, we purchased a building that had most recently housed a nursing home, and had been deserted for five or six years. It suffered from water damage from burst pipes and years of neglect, but it was structurally sound and suited our needs perfectly.

Over a period of four years, while continuing to minister to young women in our shepherding home and counseling programs, and with the help of dozens of volunteers from local churches who sacrificed thousands of hours, and donations from many local individuals, churches, and businesses, we renovated My Father's House.

The renovation has been an enormous undertaking for such a small and poorly funded ministry, but God has provided abundantly.
